The intellectual masters of whom I speak are Masters of Wine and members of the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW).


-Started in 1953, the IMW was only open to the British wine-trade

-In 1984 the IMW began accepting non-trade applicants

-In 1988 the IMW struck down the nationality rule

-There are now 313 members from from 29 countries

-The IMW recently celebrated it’s 60th birthday
