Started in 1969 and held every 3 years, the Best Sommelier in the World this year is Paolo Basso. He takes the title from previous winner and current judge Gerard Basset who won in 2010. Basset is the only person to simultaneous hold the Master of Wine, Master Sommelier and MBA Wine, he was also recently named “Decanter Man of the Year” for 2013. Basso’s accomplishment in victory is only amplified by the perspective that Basset’s credentials bring to a competition where candidates are judged in degrees of excellece. During the 3 days candidates are judged and scored on service, blind tasting and theory for a range of drinks, both alcoholic and non. The grueling competition requires total composure and full command of mental and physical faculties, even in a failing attempt.
